Nitrate ( NO3 ) is a chemical nitrogen compound and contains as its essential ingredient nitrogen, which is of particular importance as a nutrient for corals. However, excessive nitrogen concentrations lead to overfertilisation and thus to increased algae growth.
Nitrogen, however, is needed by all living things for growth, so the right concentration of nitrogen, and therefore nitrate, is especially important for an aquarium.
The optimal value for nitrate in the marine aquarium is between 1 mg / l and 10 mg / l. The GIESEMANN nitrate test is designed with its very fine lower measuring range especially for reef aquariums with stony corals. In natural seawater, nitrate concentrations are only in the range of 0.01-0.5 mg / l. Short polyp rock corals (SPS) in marine aquariums should ideally be maintained at nitrate levels between 1.0 to 2.0 mg / L.
The GIESEMANN nitrate test is therefore aimed primarily at owners of coral reef aquariums with hard corals and other nitrate-sensitive corals due to its particularly precise measuring range of up to 4 mg / l.
